Unwrap the Joy: Your Guide to Stress-Free Holidays with Mindfulness and Self-Care

A happy family decorating a christmas tree with a quote," blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love."

The holiday season often arrives with a whirlwind of preparations and festivities, bringing both joy and stress.

The pressure and to-do lists of the season can sometimes leave us feeling overwhelmed. From the attempts to create the perfect experience for loved ones to the holidays that get derailed by life or loss… not every moment is covered in glitter and joy. I want to encourage you though, no matter what your holiday looks like this year, you are allowed to try and make the best of it. Hiccups and all!

Let’s make self-care and mindfulness our guiding stars this holiday season. I’m going to give you some tried-and-true tips and resources to ensure you can do just that. So, pop the champagne, blast Mariah Carey, and let’s chat about a less-stressed holiday season…

Prioritize Self-Care

First and foremost, prioritize your own well-being during these festive times. Incorporate self-care practices into your routine because it’s these nourishing moments with yourself that benefit your wellness and self-growth. There’s no shame in buying yourself a few gifts, watching some nostalgic movies, and turning off your phone for a bit to soak in the season’s joy. But, stress management goes deeper than a cozy night in:

  • Indulge in “Me Time”: As I mentioned, engaging in hobbies that bring you joy and relaxation is scientifically proven to boost your happy chemicals and reduce stress, inflammation, and all the things that just make you feel burnt out. It’s essential to carve out moments dedicated solely to yourself.
  • Deep Breathing: When stress creeps in, take a pause and focus on your breath. A few intentional deep breaths can ground you and alleviate the tension. It improves your vagal tone and with consistent practice can help increase your tolerance for stress. Meaning, the more you do it, the less your body will respond to stress about external circumstances. A good rule of thumb for breathing and getting oxygen to your brain is the 4-6-8 rule: Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 6 seconds, exhale for 8 seconds.
  • Find Your Recharge: Discover what energizes you—whether it’s a brisk walk, meditation, or a quiet moment with a cup of tea. Whatever brings you peace and sparks some gratitude for life, ensure you allocate time for it.

Embrace Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a sanctuary amidst chaos. There are hundreds of studies that show when you incorporate these techniques to stay present and centered, your body activates its stress-relieving responses:

  • Present-Moment Focus: The holidays can be a hustle, and life changes can make the season feel isolating. I want you to dedicate a few minutes to be fully present. Close your eyes, focus on your breath, and let go of thoughts about the future or past.
  • Gratitude Practice: Once you’ve taken a moment to become present, begin acknowledging the positive aspects of your life, no matter how small, it can shift your mindset. This practice redirects attention to what truly brings joy and fulfillment. It’s a gift to have breath in your lungs and a roof over your head… life doesn’t have to be perfect to be good!
